Car Assistance In Unknown Territory
Nothing is more unnerving than breaking down on an unfamiliar highway far from home. Unfortunately, most breakdowns, engine troubles, and flat tires occur when you aren't in the best of situations.
Finding car assistance isn't always the easiest thing to do when you are stranded in the middle of nowhere, especially if there is not much chance that someone who knows you might pass by.
People have grown afraid to stop and aid a roadside stranger in need because of the dangers associated with doing so. You may have passed people up for that same reason, but when you are the one in distress, you begin to look at things differently. Even so, we live in a day and age when the majority of passersby are going to do the safe thing and keep on going.
If you have a cell phone, dialing 911 can usually connect you with the police or sheriff's office so you can get a number for car assistance or possibly a ride somewhere. Your options are to either:
1) find someone to come and look at your problem
2) get a tow truck to take your vehicle to an unfamiliar repair garage
3) or leave the car until you can return with an alternate plan
Leaving a vehicle is always risky, and depending on where you break down, that might not even be a consideration. Bringing a mechanic to look at the problem might be an option, but you are looking at possibly doubling the service cost to pay for an "onsite visit," and then possibly having to tow the vehicle anyway costing you even more.
If you are a stranger in a strange land, so to speak, the best option is to have a tow truck take your car to a repair shop that he/she knows and recommends. Towing it home or to get it repaired at a shop you have prior experience with can be very costly depending on the distance. The farther the vehicle is towed, the more expensive it is.
A legitimate garage will give you an itemized price based on what is actually wrong and exactly what is required to fix it, not how much he/she thinks you are able or willing to pay.
Breakdowns are something we all dread, but they do happen; everyone at some time or other generally finds themselves in need of car assistance. Hopefully, your times in need of roadside assistance will be few in number, if ever at all.
Just in case, always be prepared.
